WINES OF THE
Rhône Valley
C A L V E R T
Staff Selection
S
tretching from Lyon down to the
Mediterranean, the Rhône Valley offers
some of France’s most expressive and foodfriendly wines. Divided into two distinct
halves — the Northern Rhône and Southern
Rhône — the region showcases both power
and elegance, shaped by rugged terrain, warm sunshine, and centuries of
winemaking tradition. In the Northern Rhône, Syrah reigns supreme.
From the peppery, structured reds of Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage to the
supple charm of Crozes-Hermitage and Saint-Joseph, these wines combine
intensity with remarkable finesse. The whites here, primarily Viognier,
Marsanne, and Roussanne, offer floral aromas, richness, and
minerality. The Southern Rhône, anchored by Châteauneuf-du-Pape,
produces generous, sun-soaked blends dominated by Grenache, with Syrah
and Mourvèdre adding depth and spice. Surrounding appellations like
Gigondas, Vacqueyras, and Côtes du Rhône Villages deliver tremendous
value, offering the same Mediterranean warmth and ripe fruit at more
approachable prices. What ties the Rhône together is its balance of tradition
and versatility. Whether bold and structured or supple and inviting, Rhône
wines bring character and comfort to the table — the perfect companions
for both hearty fare and relaxed gatherings.
